אינספור מאמרים נכתבו בנוגע לנזקי העישון, כולל עלייה בשכיחות מחלות קשות, כגון סרטן מסוגים שונים ואיברים שונים, מחלות ריאה, התקפי לב, שבצים מוחיים, יתר לחץ דם, מחלות זיהומיות, ירידה בתפקוד המערכת החיסונית ועוד. הפגיעה היא במיוחד של המעשן עצמו אך גם של הסובבים אותו (עישון פאסיבי), ובמיוחד של ילדים ותינוקות.
