מומחה למחלות חניכיים (פריודונט) הינו אדם שלמד במוסד אקדמאי מוכר 4 שנים נוספות ועבר בהצלחה את מבחני הרישוי של משרד הבריאות.המומחיות מתמקדת באבחון וטיפול במחלות חניכיים, שתלים ופרוצדורות לבניית עצם.
המומחה לחניכיים הוא הסמכות המקצועית המתאימה ביותר לטיפול במחלות חניכיים.
בשנת 2007 התקבל האיגוד הישראלי לפריודונטיה ואוסאואינטגרציה כחבר מלא בפדרציה האירופאית לפריודונטיה ובכך נעשה צעד חשוב בצירוף מדינת ישראל לקהילה הבינלאומית.
מטרת האיגוד:
עוסק בהפצת ידע לכלל הציבור בישראל בנושא מחלות החניכיים והטיפול בהן וכן בנושא שתלים דנטלים לטיפול בשיניים חסרות.
האיגוד מארגן הרצאות וכנסים לכלל רופאי השיניים בישראל וכן לחברי האיגוד במטרה להפיץ את החידושים האחרונים בהבנת מחלות החניכיים ובטיפול בהן וכן בשימוש בשתלים להשלמת שיניים חסרות.
